Discover how automation, AI, and digital integration are shaping the future of the Finnish financial management and accounting industry.

The Future of Financial Management in Finland: Challenges, Opportunities, and the Digital Leap

Discussion about the revolutionary technological transformation in the financial management industry has become commonplace—and has it perhaps even become a cliché? New innovations presented as revolutionary are seen frequently, promising to make the lives of accounting firms and financial management professionals easier. But how do you navigate this jungle of solutions where every vendor claims to offer the one and only right answer?

Perhaps the solution does not lie solely in new technology, but in how you and your competitors adapt to it.

There is no doubt that the industry is evolving at a breakneck pace. If you work in the financial management sector, you have surely noticed the speed of change—whether it's the flood of AI-generated emails, the constantly changing industry terminology, or the increasing prevalence of automation in daily work. But what does the future of the Finnish financial management industry actually look like?

To get a clearer picture, we sat down with Juha Sihvonen, Director of Customer Relations and member of the future working group at the Association of Finnish Financial Administration (Taloushallintoliitto), to discuss the future of the industry and how companies can prepare for the changes ahead.

The Next Chapter of Finnish Financial Management

”In the coming years, the Finnish financial management industry will become increasingly digitalized and more customer-centric,” Sihvonen says. ”Automation and artificial intelligence are developing rapidly, reducing the role of traditional bookkeeping in terms of time consumption and guiding accounting firms to focus more on analytics, forecasting, and, for example, strategic advisory.”

Customers are no longer satisfied with just regular reports—they expect real-time visibility into their financial situation. This makes integrations between different systems even more important.

As competition intensifies, companies must differentiate themselves one way or another—by specializing in specific industries, expanding internationally, or developing entirely new service models. Mere technical expertise is no longer enough. Successful accounting firms combine financial expertise with deep customer understanding and offer proactive, clear, and strategic financial advice.

What Makes the Finnish Market Unique?

Although the financial management industry faces similar challenges across all Nordic countries, the Finnish market has some unique characteristics. Unlike in other Nordic countries, the accounting industry in Finland is not regulated by legislation—meaning anyone can, for example, establish an accounting firm without specific statutory requirements. However, the industry self-regulates through the financial management authorisation system.

The flexibility of the industry has perhaps even encouraged innovation, and Finnish accounting firms are often pioneers in digital services from an international perspective. ”Finland has been a leading country in, for example, e-invoicing, electronic authority reporting, and payroll automation,” Sihvonen notes. ”Alan toimijat myös tekezät aktiivisesti yhteistyötä viranomaisten kanssa digitalisaation ja parhaiden käytäntöjen edistämiseksi.” -> ”Industry players also actively cooperate with authorities to promote digitalization and best practices.”

Despite the progress made, there is still a long way to go to achieve full digitalization. Finnish accounting firms are at the forefront of development in many areas, but there are still plenty of opportunities for growth and advancement.

What Can Finland Learn from Other Nordic Countries?

Although Finland is a pioneer in digital financial management services, one significant challenge is the lack of internationalization. Most Finnish accounting firms focus on the Finnish market, and only a few expand their operations beyond the country's borders.

According to Sihvonen, Finnish accounting firms could benefit from a more international perspective, the development of multilingual services, and a more flexible, customer-centric service model. In other Nordic countries, there are accounting firms that serve clients more broadly in international markets, offer services in multiple languages, and adapt their services to different business environments.

This is both a challenge and an opportunity. As digitalization lowers borders, Finnish accounting firms that adopt a more global perspective could achieve a significant competitive advantage in the coming years.

The Direction of the Future

The Finnish financial management industry is in a state of transition. Digital transformation is no longer just a vision of the future—it is happening right now, and companies that do not adapt will fall behind. In the future, those who leverage automation, integrate AI into their processes, and expand from traditional bookkeeping toward value-added services are most likely to succeed.

Samalla erottautuminen on elintärkeää. Olipa kyse erikoistumisesta, kansainvälisestä laajentumisesta tai paremmasta asiakaskokemuksesta, yritysten on löydettävä tapoja erottua alati kilpaillummilla markkinoilla. -> At the same time, differentiation is vital. Whether through specialization, international expansion, or a better customer experience, companies must find ways to stand out in an increasingly competitive market.

”At Kravia, we see this change happening every day,” says Philip Keihäs, Head of Partnerships Finland. ”Accounting firms are under growing pressure to offer more than just statutory services. Our goal is to provide solutions that not only automate processes but also enable deeper analysis and strategic value for clients. The companies that succeed in truly combining technology with a customer-centric approach will thrive.”

One thing is certain: the future of the Finnish financial management industry is digital, dynamic, and full of opportunities. The question is—how are you going to seize them?
